Welcome New Volunteers!

We would like to welcome you to the Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa family. There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer and we thank you for opening your heart to a neighbor in need.

Where to Meet:

Click on the button for the location of our 15 sites.  

 

 

 

When to Meet:

  • Arrive at site at 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. depending on site location.

  • About 10 minutes to pick up route sheets and meals

  • Routes typically take about an hour

 

At The Site:

  • A coordinator will be there to show you how distribution works at their site

  • Most sites have thermal totes or ice chests for you to take as you deliver the meals

  • You will receive route sheets, typically in a binder with a map, which explains what types of meals each recipient receive as well as any special instructions

  • Name, Address, and Phone number

  • Meal Type

  • Emergency Contact

  • Special Instructions

Name and Adresses

  • Name and Address on route sheet. Addresses may not be clearly marked and may even be handwritten in marker. Call the recipient if you are unsure.

Meal Type (Options)

  • Be sure to match the colored lables and bags to each house

  • Hot Meals

    • Regular: White

    • Diabetic: Yellow

    • Low Sodium: Red

    • Vegitarian: Green

  • Frozen

  • Breakfast

 

Special Instructions

  • Read instructions before approaching the house

  • It will help if you know what to expect and how to assist the recipient

 

Map

 

 

 

  • Map of the route will also be provided with client names

  • It will be useful to have GPS in car or on smart phone

 

At The House:

  • Address may not be clearly marked, call recipient if you are unsure

  • Beware of any safety issues like unsafe stairs

  • If there is an unrestrained animal, you can call the client to restrain the animal until the delivery is made

  • Knock loudly and call out “Meals on Wheels.”

  • Be patient! Recipients may be slow to door

  • You can offer to bring in food if recipient needs help.

  • Recipients may ask for help with small tasks that are difficult for them. This is not required, but feel free if you feel comfortable assisting

 

Not at Home?

  • Call the recipient

  • Refer to route sheet to see if there are special instructions

  • Do not leave meal outside, even if there is a note from the recipient asking you to

  • Leave a “Missed you notice” found in your Route binder

  • Give the meal to another recipient on your route

 

Concerned?

  • If there is an emergency please call 911

  • If you are concerned about the recipient you can contact the Meals on Wheels office at (918) 627-4103

  • You can also let the site coordinator know so that they can convey the message to other drivers if needed

  • You can also call the recipients emergency contact number provided on the route sheet.

 

Done!

  • Drivers return to the distribution site at most locations so they can return their totes and ice chests and route sheets

  • Let the coordinators know

    • If there were any meals not delivered

    • New information like if the recipient won’t need a meal next week or now need diabetic meals

    • Other useful information like if something on the route sheet should be changed

For many seniors, the trusted Meals on Wheels volunteer or staff member who shows up every day with a hot meal and a warm smile is the only person they see or speak with all day. Thank you for your willingness to be that person!
