Home Meal Delivery

Home Meal Delivery

Our recipients are the lifeblood of our organization, and have been since 1970. We serve those who are homebound. What does being homebound mean? It means our recipients are unable to leave their home without considerable effort or assistance. This program is what our nonprofit is founded on, and will continue to serve Tulsa’s communities with your help as a driver, site coordinator, packer, volunteer, donator and a communicator of MOW’s mission.

In 2014, Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa delivered nearly 1,000 meals every day.

The Better Foods, Better Health Initiative is a New Program Wide Initiative, which renews the Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa Commitment to utilize more local, and regionally produced fruits and vegetables.  Where possible and economically feasible, we will use minimally processed, nutrient dense and organic foods in all phases of meal production. We believe this new commitment to the processes and the food will produce better health outcomes for our Meals on Wheels Recipients.

There are high schools in Tulsa where more than 34 percent of the kids do not know when they will eat their next meal. Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa is taking innovative action to improve the health and well-being of our communities through better nutrition with the Feed our Future High School Adoption Program. This program will assist students in the Tulsa Public School System who face persistent food insecurity and hunger.

The new Breakfast Initiative was introduced in the summer of 2015 by Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa.  Sixty percent of our clients report that more than half of the food they consume daily comes from Meals on Wheels. It is important we provide them with more food.  The Breakfast Initiative is a second meals program, which provides clients with a nutrient dense breakfast, offered in addition to their noon meal.  By delivering two healthy meals to our clients per day, we hope to help them improve or maintain their health so that they can continue to live independently, in their own homes.

One of our exciting new initiatives, MOW Kids Club, kicked off this summer with Greenwood Cultural Center’s Summer Arts Program. These great kids accompanied our volunteers at the The Hills distribution site to give out meals and artwork to the recipients on the route. The kids and the recipients love it!

Pets are important to people, especially the homebound. They foster a sense of security, help combat loneliness and depression, and increase a person’s wellness.  Just as adults protect young ones from food insecurity, seniors tend to protect their pets from food insecurity.  PawStarz is a supplemental pet food program which ensures our recipients maintain healthy diets without sacrificing their meal to protect a pet from hunger. Our program partners include The Banfield Charitable Trust and Community Care College Veterinary Assisting Program which helps us to purchase and distribute the pet food.
